The Elegant Universe - Brian Greene

Welcome to the WLW Book Club. I'll start things by mentioning that I'm finishing Brian Greene's The Elegant Universe and, although extremely well written (and edited) it waffles on far too much about how Superstring Theory is the bee's knees of all theories - even though it's completely untestable. I officially recommend the first half to people who would want to sound impressive at parties, and the second half to people who would like to sound impressive at a Star Trek convention.

Check out the travel writings of Patrick Leigh Fermor, British commando in WWII, scholar, expatriate living in Greece. Literary polymath. Start with "A Time Of Gifts," vol. I of his account of traveling from London to Istanbul on foot in the thirties. Feast of language.

I'm reminded of (although it's fiction) Flashman by George MacDonald Fraser which I read a few months ago. Also a feast of language, and lots of fun. It's set in the early 19th century around the British-Afghan war, focussing on the travellings of the (fake) Lt. Flashman. The characters and events surrounding 'Flashy' are very true to the historic record though. Great descriptive prose. I strongly recommend it.

Hey Tim. I Don't know if you remember but I bought that book ages ago. Unfortunately, like so many, it sits on my shelf unread. However, as I am keen to be the life of any party (and Star Trek Convention for that matter) I will dust it off and give it a go.
